Country retreat of the famous Arts & Crafts designer William Morris, and his wife Jane Morris (a Pre-Raphaelite model and talented embroiderer). Originally called Lower Farm, the house was built in around 1600 for Thomas Turner, a successful yeoman farmer. In 1871 the designer-craftsman and writer William Morris took it on a joint lease with the Pre-Raphaelite artist Rosetti. It was, in Morris's words, 'a heaven on earth', and was a source of pleasure and inspiration for the rest of his life.
