When Shell was out fishing with his newly-wed wife the Kraken came upon them and destroyed their ship. They were shipwrecked together and when Kyoto's wife finally died Kyoto couldn't bear part with his memories of her. So much so that when he was finally rescued he took all of his makeshift furniture and ivy and placed it in his new house.
